CUP polls students on Springfest choices

The Council for University Programs (CUP) held its first general council meeting of the semester and its first ever Roll-Out Meeting last Wednesday, inviting comments and suggestions from the student body.

The meeting was designed to make newcomers feel at ease, recapping the previous semester’s events and projects. CUP chairs spoke about their plans for this semester and encouraged new members to play a role in CUP.

A Springfest survey has just been posted on the CUP Web site, (www.cup.neu.edu), and every student can vote for what he or she believes are the best acts to play at Springfest.

“This online poll is not public and it is just to get ideas,” said Kevin Roche, assistant vice president of marketing for CUP. “So people can’t complain when they don’t get their first choice.”

Students can only vote once, and Springfest Chair Scott Hultman encourages all students to vote.

“The more people we can get, the more diverse our decisions can be and the better Springfest week and the concert can be,” Hultman said.

Springfest isn’t all CUP has come up with for the spring semester.

CUP will join forces with the Northeastern University Democrats, College Republicans and potentially another student group in afterHOURS to watch the State of the Union address.

CUP is also planning an event with the Arab Student Association to bring an Arabic lecturer or musician to campus. Also, CUP plans to join with the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) again after successfully bringing Pablo Francisco to campus during Homecoming.

On March 2, CUP and LASO are planning a variety show, which LASO President Sergio Marrero said he hopes will be a true “student show.”

“I think we should have students doing different acts, dancing, comedy, lots of different things,” Marrero said at the CUP meeting Wednesday. “This can be a real student show with all and only students performing.”

Musical acts are also on the horizon.

Andy Sellars, concert chair, said he is prepping for three Battles of the Bands that will take place March 15 and 16 and April 1.

There is also a soul/R’B show and a punk/hardcore show in the works for April 18.

CUP’s showcases chair, Andie Rizzolo, is also trying to get a movie sneak preview to show on campus sometime this spring.

Members of CUP’s e-board said they were happy to see some new faces and connect with other student groups.

“Hopefully more people will get involved and we can come up with some great new things,” said CUP President Amanda Zoglio.

CUP meetings are held every Wednesday in 442 Curry Student Center at 6:30 p.m.
