Senior thrower Derek Anderson placed first in shot put 59 feet .75 inches and weight throw 60 feet .25 inches competitions to lead the Huskies to a fifth place finish in the Great Dane Classic in New York, N.Y. on Friday, Jan. 20. The Northeastern Player of the Week attributes a lot of his success to hard-work while redshirting his junior year.
“There was a new coach that I wanted an extra-year to work with, so I redshirted,” Anderson said.
Anderson, who was named an All-American for his performance at the NCAA outdoor Championship the 2003-04 season, is the lone senior on a young team quickly gaining experience.
“We look good, but a little inexperienced and young,” Anderson said. “It comes down to good coaching, a lot of hard work and a little luck and we’ll be all right.”
With the guidance of Anderson, the Husky team has put together a solid season, beating Harvard earlier in the year and putting an impressive show at the Yale Track Classic Jan. 14.
The Huskies race again Friday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games in the Reggie Lewis Center.
