Student opinion mixed on online course offerings

Students interested in taking online courses at Northeastern may be hard-pressed to find information on the subject, despite the increasing popularity of these courses nationwide.

At least 2.3 million people in the United States took some type of online course in 2004, according to a study by the Sloan Consortium, an online education group. But Northeastern has not jumped on that bandwagon just yet.

“I know other schools do have online courses, and it’s good to incorporate technology into learning, which is something we’re big about,” said Michael DeRamo, vice president for academic affairs for the Student Government Association (SGA).

DeRamo said SGA’s position is that Northeastern needs to have a better selection of actual course offerings, especially during the summer sessions, before advocating for online courses.

He said SGA had not received any requests or complaints from students looking to take courses online. The Provost’s office has also heard little on the subject.
