Women’s Track ‘ Field: Fifth straight Great Dane Classic win

By Nate Owen

For the fifth straight year, the Northeastern women’s track team emerged victorious from the Great Dane Classic. The team scored 143 points on Friday, beating runner up and host Albany by 27 points at the New Balance Armory in New York, N.Y.

Northeastern had several strong performances, especially from senior sprinter Jordine Kimbrel, who set new meet records in the 55- and 200-meter dash, as well as leading the 4×400 relay team to a second place finish.

“She had a real good afternoon,” said coach Sherman Hart, about Kimbrel’s performance. The strong showing earned her the MVP award for the meet.

All-American thrower junior Zara Northover broke her own meet record with a distance of 51.77 feet. Other strong performers for NU included sophomore Laura McCloskey and senior Laura Chmielewski, who won the 1,000-meter run and pole vault, respectively.

When asked if there was any specific reason for Northeastern’s history of success at the Great Dane Classic, Hart said, “[The] women’s team is just good, a very talented group of young ladies to go down and take no prisoners.”

Another factor he mentioned is that “two-thirds of the team is from the New York-New Jersey area and it’s show-off time [for them].”

In addition to the victory, the meet also helped establish a personality for the team, said Hart.

“Overall, my team had a really good day. Jordine, Zara and other upperclassmen stepped up to the plate. [There] were a lot of really good performances that were the best of the year,” he said.

At one point, Northeastern only held only a slim 55-53 point advantage. Hart told his team, “It’s game time, time to step up to the plate.”

Northeastern responded, and finished with a convincing victory, 136 points over last place Temple.

NU will host the Reebok Boston Indoor Games this Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center.
