Women’s Track ‘ Field: Track beats BC by ‘unmerciful’ 73 points

By Nate Owen

The Northeastern women’s track team followed up its strong showing at the Great Dane Classic in New York City with a victory at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center.

NU took first place with a score of 169 points, 73.5 points ahead of runner-up Boston College. The Huskies finished first in seven events on the day.

Junior thrower Zara North-over, led the team with a first-place finish in the shot put (52.17 feet). Sophomore sprinter Charity Briggs won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.11 seconds and sophomore Tre-maine Shaw took first place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.24 seconds. NU also won the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:53.44, almost seven seconds ahead of second place Williams College. Sprinters senior Jordine Kimbrel and junior Shanae Henry finished 1-2 in both the 55- and 200-meter dash. For Kimbrel, it was another strong day following her MVP performance at the Great Dane Classic.

No individual MVP was named for this meet, but coach Sherman Hart said that with its strong overall performance, the entire team deserved MVP honors. He feared after the Great Dane Classic, the team “would suffer a let-down.” But that was not the case and Hart was pleased with his team’s performance at the Indoor Games.

“The team won events unmercifully,” he said. “I am pleased they went out on the attack.”

Junior Erin Ballard finished first for the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.96.

“[She] had a really good time [in the race],” Hart said. “I am extremely pleased with her.”

Ballard’s strong performance puts Northeastern in a good position for upcoming meets, Hart said.

Similar to last week, Hart felt this meet helped to further establish leaders on the team. With her strong performance over the past several meets, Kimbrel has established herself as a leader for the team, Hart said.

But Hart also said he felt that senior Laura Chmielewski and Northover were emerging as leaders and “helping the younger ones along.”
