Player of the Week: Joe Vitale

Freshman forward Joe Vitale tallied two goals in the final period to lead Northeastern to a 6-4 win over UMass Lowell on Friday at Matthews Arena. It was the Huskies’ first win since beating UMass-Amherst Nov. 11, and according to The Northeastern News Player of the Week, was one of his most memorable nights on the ice.

“It was one of those nights when everything was going in,” Vitale said. “Hockey is one of those games where if the timing and pace are right, things will be good. That win was one of those moments you don’t wanna leave. With our record you’d think it’d be tough to get on the ice, but it really is great to go to the rink and see [my teammates].”

Vitale has played well in his freshman season despite the team’s 2-20-6 record. He is third on the team in points and second among first-year players behind fellow freshman forward Ryan Ginand. Vitale points to his time playing for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League for helping to smooth his transition into Hockey East play.

“It hasn’t been that difficult coming here to play; last year my league was very intense,” Vitale said.
