Jamaica Plain

By Marc Larocque

Jamaica Plain is about two miles from campus, which is a further trip than other neighborhoods, but residents say the atmosphere makes it worthwhile.

“Jamaica Plain is a very diverse community,” said Jay Johnston, a freshman business major at Northeastern. “There are families as well as yuppies, artist types and students.”

Rent there is around $700-$800 a room.

The neighborhood is sandwiched between Roxbury and Brookline. Sections of Jamaica Plain are sometimes seen as dangerous, according to the Northeastern off-campus housing site. But the site also said this diversity in Jamaica Plain has created a strong sense of social awareness and tolerance among residents.

During the day, children can be seen playing around the neighborhood, and Jamaica Plain has a park with a pond and a huge hill for sledding.

Johnston has lived in JP since the beginning of the year. He said he takes the ten-minute bus ride to campus on the number 39 bus daily and has no problem with the area.
