Seeing stars: Teddy Geiger

By C. Mae Waugh

Teddy Geiger’s first performance at a university was less than successful.

“My first time there were just two people sitting there watching me while they ate lunch,” said the 17-year-old.

But Monday night in afterHOURS, more than 140 people came out to see the singer/songwriter.

Geiger’s single, “Confidence (For You I Will),” recently hit number one on iTunes and he has appeared on TRL, Good Morning America and The Late Show with David Letterman.

His newfound fame was a key factor in attracting students to the show.

Some, like sophomore music industry major Kal Varnsenn, who had heard his song on the radio and seen him on TV decided to come and check him out.

“His song was decent,” Varnsenn said. “He has a pop-rock, underground artistic flavor.”

Geiger’s good looks were the incentive for others.

“He’s cute for a younger guy,” said Wendy Johnson, a junior criminal justice major.

Johnny Mazcko opened the show with an acoustic set on his guitar and the local Boston band Six Day Slide followed, raising the volume with drums and an electric guitar. People continued to stream through the doors until they just about covered the floor.

When Geiger performed, the audience stood to crowd the stage.

“He was pretty good,” said Olivia Kalinowski, a freshman undecided major. “I expected him to be young and annoying, but he wasn’t.”

Geiger’s show also brought him some new fans.

“He’s a good up-and-coming star,” said Allison Sam, a junior speech and language pathology major. “I’m going to watch him in the future.”

However, Geiger was not well-received by all. A friend invited Andrea Zirri, junior finance major, to the event.

“My friend said the kid will be famous soon,” he said. “But it wasn’t really my kind of music.”

Chris Lewis, Geiger’s tour and production manager, said Geiger is bound for good things.

“He’s a great kid, talented, mature for 17,” Lewis said. “He’s already an accomplished musician and few at that age can do as well.”
