Swimming and Diving: Class of 2011 to make big splash for 2006 season

The Northeastern swimming and diving team has announced the group of freshmen and transfers joining the Huskies next season. Head coach Roy Coates announced Friday nine recruits will make their way to Huntington Avenue in September, along with the two swimmers signed in December.

“We did well with this particular class,” Roy Coates said. “We are very lucky to have so many girls that can make an immediate impact.”

Kathrine Fugge of Farmington, Conn., and Alicia Negrotti of Plaistow, N.H., were announced as 2006-07 recruits Dec. 19, 2005.

“Kathrine is an exceptional swimmer,” Coates said. “She will come in and have a tremendous impact, possibly the biggest of the incoming freshmen.”

Joining them will be West Roxbury native Emily Sutliff who was top-10 New England distance swimmer and a U.S. Sectional Qualifier in 2005 and 2006. Michelle Ferguson of Branford, Conn., will also be a distance swimmer for the Huskies.

Twin sisters Alexis and Victoria Kalevich, both of New Providence, N.J., will join the team. While both will compete in the backstroke, Alexis also specializes in the individual medley and Victoria excels in the butterfly.

“We recruited them together and are very lucky to have them both,” Coates said.

Jaclyn Dalessandro of Warrington, Penn., and Natalia Snegour of Boxborough will provide depth in the breaststroke and backstroke, respectively.

Joining NU from Glendor, Calif., Jenae Waddell will compete in multiple freestyle sprints.

Rounding out the swimmers is a transfer from Bloomsburg College in Bloomsburg, Penn., Kristen Ohlsen. She is a freestyle sprinter and will compete for spots on the Husky freestyle relays.

“She actually contacted us,” Coates said. “She is a sign language major and it was discontinued at Bloomsburg. Northeastern is one of the programs she looked into and she talked to us after that.”

Stoneham native Samantha Molle will join the Huskies and complete the six-person diving squad.
