Women’s Basketball: Former head coach gets assistant job

Former Northeastern women’s basketball head coach Willette White has been named an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Oregon.

White joins five-year head coach Bev Smith at Oregon, after resigning from Northeastern in March. She spent six years with the Huskies, after seven seasons as associate head coach at UCLA.

At UCLA she was known for her recruiting skills. White helped mold several standout players at UCLA, most notably Maylana Martin, who was a first-round pick of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.

While at Oregon, White will focus on recruiting for the Ducks in the competitive Pac-10 conference.

White compiled a 64-109 record at Northeastern and led the Huskies in their transition from America East to the Colonial Athletic Association.

Before joining the UCLA staff she spent eight seasons at Washington and one season at Iowa State.

Prior to that, she was a graduate assistant during both the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons at Ohio State under 1996 Olympic coach Tara VanDerveer.
