Huskies get two exhibition wins

By Jewel Della Valle

Senior forward Ashley Bielawski had three goals and two assists in the Northeastern women’s hockey team’s two exhibition games last weekend. The Huskies defeated the Bluewater Jr. Hawks, 4-1, Saturday and the Toronto Junior Aeros, 3-0, Sunday.

In the 19th minute of Saturday’s match Bielawski scored her first goal off a pass from senior co-assistant captain Crystal Rochon. Freshman forward Ginny Berg received the second assist.

Bielawski made it 2-0 in the second period in the 14th minute when the Huskies were shorthanded, this time receiving a pass in front of the net from junior forward Nikki Petrich for the goal.

Northeastern kept the pressure on the Hawks when Petrich, getting an assist from freshman Katy Applin, shot the puck past Hawks goalie Tara Wister for the 3-0 advantage.

The Hawks, facing the prospect of a shutout, came out strong in the third period, scoring a goal less than one minute into play. Forward Nicky Futers took a pass from forward Ally Tarr and beat sophomore goalie Sarah Belliveau to make it a 3-1 game.

The Huskies answered with another goal, this time by sophomore forward Missy Elumba on a power play at 14:51. Freshman Julia Clark and Bielawski got the assists.

“Our first game I thought we were a little shaky but we still were able to capitalize [on] putting the puck in the net,” said head coach Laura Schuler. “But the second game we played much better.
