Surprise fire inspections startle over spring break

Coming back from Spring Break is a moment few students enjoy. But for some that moment was even less enjoyable when they discovered someone had been in their rooms and their possessions had been moved around.

This past weekend, facilities personnel entered numerous residence hall rooms without notice and cleared a path to the fire escapes. They were responding to an order from the City of Boston Inspectional Services Division (ISD), which inspected residence halls over Spring Break and found access to several fire escapes blocked.

ISD began the inspection partially in response to the fire at an off-campus apartment that left two Boston University students dead Feb. 24, said Stan Duci, director of customer service for the university’s facilities department.
