Women’s Track ‘ Field: Huskies look toward CAA Championship

The freezing New England weather didn’t hinder the women’s track ‘ field team at the Solomon Invitational in Dedham Saturday. The meet was a preview of how the Huskies hope to perform next week at the CAA Championship.

“The cold made us hold back some,” said head coach Sherman Hart. “But our goal was to make it through healthy. We accomplished what we wanted.”

Senior Shanae Henry finished second in the 100-meter dash in 12.63 seconds. Close behind was freshman Celeste Holder in fourth at 13.43 seconds. Freshman Erin Johnson placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.74 seconds. Johnson later went on to place sixth in the 800-meter run (2:29.15) with senior Ashleigh Bordwell finishing right behind (2:31.17).

Junior Tramaine Shaw placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.94 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, senior DaviAnn Brown placed second with a time of 1:06.08.

Sophomore Kirsten Ripple tied for third in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.13 meters. In the same event, sophomore Dara Samuel placed third with a height of 3.13 meters. Freshman Brooke Borso placed fifth, with freshman Kristen Hafford in sixth.

Junior Alice Rybalko placed third in the long jump with a length of 5.14 meters with senior Ashley Wilson placing fifth in the same event (5.06 meters).

Freshman Lauren Roscus placed third in the triple jump, reaching a length of 10.28 meters. Behind Roscus was Rybalko with a length of 10.23 meters.

Senior Zara Northover won the shot put, throwing a distance of 15.19 meters. She went on to place fifth in the hammer throw (45.53 meters).

In the javelin throw, sophomore Nancy Rowe set a new personal best by throwing a distance of 40.07 meters, good for second place. Placing behind her was freshman Colleen Sorensen (34.79 meters).

Next week the Huskies will travel to Harrisburg, Penn. to compete in the CAA Championship. With the favorable results turned in at Solomon, Hart has high hopes for his team.

“We just have to go out and go after the win,” he said.
