Dabrowiecki signs with Brewers

By Nate Owen, News Staff

After finishing his Husky career as the school’s all-time leader in innings pitched, Kris Dabrowiecki took the first step toward pitching his first professional inning, signing a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers last Wednesday.
Dabrowiecki finished his Northeastern career with 286 innings pitched and a 21-13 record with a 4.22 ERA. His 21 wins and 236 career strikeouts rank him third on the Huskies all-time list. He was drafted by the Brewers in the 34th round of the MLB amateur draft in 2004 but came to Northeastern instead. After a quiet senior year last spring, the righthander went undrafted.
‘I thought some teams had some interest [in the draft last summer]. I didn’t have that great of a senior year, but I thought I might get picked up in the later rounds,’ he said.
‘ Dabrowiecki, a Toronto native, said he spent the summer pitching for the Intercounty Baseball League in Ontario and’ with the Canadian University Baseball team. He traveled with the team to the Czech Republic for two weeks as part of the World University Baseball championships.
It was almost by luck that he was spotted by the Brewers, he said.
‘I was throwing with the [Northeastern] team here, getting ready to go to scout day and a [Milwaukee] scout randomly showed up to watch the team. He liked what he saw [in me],’ he said.
Dabrowiecki flew to Milwaukee last Monday and participated in a tryout Tuesday.’ He will report to spring training in Phoenix March 13. He said his role will be determined in spring training.
‘They asked me where I felt comfortable,’ he said. ‘I told them I’ve been a starter most of my life, but I did start pitching in relief last summer.’
Dabrowiecki is currently in his last semester at Northeastern and said he is trying to figure out how to finish his classes. He said he is looking into taking online courses.
As for his time at Northeastern, Dabrowiecki said some of his best memories were the times spent with his teammates.
‘I was pretty happy with what I did [at Northeastern], he said.’ ‘I made a lot of great friends and it was great going on road trips with everyone.’
