Rally draws a thousand despite cold weather

By Kate Augusto

An estimated 1,000 people rallied at Copley Square last night in 16 degree weather to support Israel’s right to defend itself and support a lasting peace between Palestine and Israel, said Ari Alexenberg, director of the Israel Action Center, which is part of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston. They gathered as violence continues between Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and Israelis.

While the rally drew its fair share of critics wielding signs against Israel’s recent military campaign, Alexenberg said the night was a success.

‘I was pleased [with the turn out],’ Alexenberg said. ‘I wasn’t sure we’d be able to get that because of the cold, but it just shows the level of commitment people have.’

There were several speakers at the rally, including Rony Yedidia, Consul of Israel at the Consulate General of Israel to New England. The event was sponsored by about 28 non-profit, religious and educational organizations, Alexenberg said.

Several students also attended, including members of Northeastern Hillel, who had a booth on the ground floor of Curry Student Center before the event.
