Track teams compete at Great Dane Classic

Last Friday Albany hosted the Great Dane Classic in New York, N.Y. The Great Danes swept both the men’s and women’s’ track meets. In the men’s they beat the second place team by 82.5 points and Northeastern, whom finished second, by 111.5 points. ‘ On the women’s side the Huskies fell a mere 17 points short of Albany, finishing in third.

For the women there were two individual winners. Junior Consandria Walker edged the competition by .02 meters in the long jump to win with a mark of 5.78 meters. In the running events the Huskies won the 55′-meter dash. Sophomore Porshe Giddings won by the slim margin of .05 seconds’ with a mark of 6.99 seconds. Senior Brittany Moriarty finished a strong second in the one mile with a time of 4:59.54. Senior Olivia Kalinowska finished third in the pole vault, while sophomore Althea Charles was second in the weight throw. The distance medley finished in second place.

The men had a strong showing in the field events. They won the shot put due to the strong throwing of junior co-captain Nate Hunter. Hunter threw for 18.28 meters. This was his career best and was’ a quarter-inch short of being the fifth Husky to throw for 60 feet during the indoor season. Junior Adrian Li, the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion in the high jump, jumped his best ever height of 6-feet-9-inches, but falling two inches. short to second place. In the weight throw senior Barmidele Faboyede finished fourth.

On the track senior co-captain Jack Sherman took fifth in the 55′-meter high hurdles with a time of 7.69 seconds. In the 500-meter junior co-captain Jonathan Hall was also fifth finishing in 1:04.52.

Swimming & Diving defeats’ Vermont on Senior Day

Saturday morning was Senior Day at Barletta Natatorium’ as’ the Huskies played host to Vermont. The meet opened with a brief ceremony to honor the seniors, then proceeded to the Huskies winning the first event, the 400′-meter medley relay. They went on to win the meet handily, 172-128.

The Huskies can accredit the win to the fact they had at least one swimmer in the top three in all 16 events. Another key to victory was the fact they went 1-2 in both of the diving events with freshman Rachael Peterson and senior Courtney Flanagan.

Senior captain Elena Alvarez won both the 100′-meter (1:06.29)’ and 200′-meter (2:26.54)’ breaststroke events. In the 100′-meter butterfly the other senior captain Alexandra Doty won with a time of 59.02 seconds’ while Alvarez was second with a time of 59.13 seconds. Doty finished in second in the 100′-meter backstroke (1:00.19). Junior Kathrine Fugge came in second in the 100′-meter (53.85 seconds)’ and 200′-meter (1:55.8)’ freestyle events and also in the 200′-meter individual medley (2:12.17).

The team is off for a week until its next meet against Dartmouth’ Feb. 7 at noon.
