Women’s Hockey: Black Bears sweep weekend series with Huskies

By Jared Sugerman, News Staff

Earlier this season, Northeastern’s goaltenders made a habit of stealing games from their opponents. Last weekend, Maine’s Genevieve Turgeon turned the tables.

After making 31 saves in a 4-2 victory Friday, Turgeon stopped 40 shots, including three during a shootout, to help the Black Bears (5-19-3, 2-11-2 Hockey East) complete a weekend sweep of the Huskies (10-13-3, 5-9-1 HEA) with a 3-2 shootout victory Saturday. Freshman goalie Florence Schelling made 21 saves during Friday’s loss, and sophomore Leah Sulyma made 20 saves Saturday, as well as two during the shootout.

‘We had a great week of practice. The intensity was there. We were fired up,’ said head coach Dave Flint.’ ‘We just played Connecticut with 12 skaters pretty much and lost 1-0 and played out hearts out. I thought we were going to be ready to go.’
The return of junior defender Kasey Cedorchuk and leading-scorer, sophomore’ Kristi Kehoe, gave Flint two more players with which to work, but the Huskies’ effort in Orono was not enough to get them past a Hockey East foe who is attempting to wrestle the sixth and final conference playoff spot from Northeastern.

‘We’ve got to get everybody that’s in the lineup playing 60 minutes of hockey,’ Flint said.’ ‘We’re facing some adversity and you can see a lot about character by how people deal with adversity.’
After the Huskies fell into a three-goal hole Friday, Flint made an effort to compose his squad by calling a timeout. Sophomore forward Alyssa Wohlfeiler scored shortly thereafter to bring Northeastern within two goals, but the Huskies would not draw any closer to the Black Bears.

Saturday, Maine took a 1-0 lead 20 seconds into the first period, but Northeastern junior defender and co-captain Katy Applin scored her second goal of the weekend later in the session to tie the score. The teams exchanged goals once again during the middle frame before a scoreless third period and overtime led to a shootout.

Turgeon turned Kehoe, senior forward Ali Bielawski and Wohlfeiler aside in succession, but Maine was successful on its third and final attempt against Sulyma to earn them a 1-0 shootout win.

Feb. 3, Northeastern and Boston College (16-7-3, 10-5-1 HEA) will face off in a first round Beanpot tournament game at Matthews Arena. The victor of that 8 p.m. match-up will play the winner of the 5 p.m. contest, featuring Boston University (13-9-5, 10-6 HEA) and Harvard (10-7-3, 10-4-2 ECAC).
