Robyn, Cherrytree Sessions EP:’ Feb. 3

The wait was practically painful for Robyn’s brilliant self-titled record to finally hit US shores in 2008 ‘- fours years after it dropped abroad. But she’s making up for lost time with the Cherrytree Sessions, an EP slated for release tomorrow. It will feature acoustic renditions of her electro-pop hits like ‘With Every Heartbeat,’ ‘Be Mine!’ and ‘Bum Like You.’ The content might not be new, but let’s take what we can get for the time being. The EP will be available exclusively at Borders.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, self-titled:’ Feb. 3

Pair the dreamy vocals of My Bloody Valentine with the pop sensibilities of Asobi Seksu and you wind up with the debut full-length from one of the most promising acts today. Featuring the early single ‘Everything With You,’ an immaculate throwback to the heyday of British shoegaze, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart might have just set the standard for all 2009 releases. Moreover, the music website Stereogum.com recently named them an ‘Artist to Watch.’

The Midnight Meat Train:’ Feb. 17

Based on the titular short story by horror auteur Clive Barker, this film follows a New York City photographer who attempts to track down and document an unkown serial killer known only as the ‘Subway Butcher.’ The Midnight Meat Train is one of the most visually enthralling horror films of the past 10 years and is widely considered the best Clive Barker adapation since ‘Hellraiser’ in 1987.

Wolves in the Throne Room, Malevolent Grain EP:’ Feb. 3

The world will have to wait a couple more months before Wolves in the Throne Room’s third full-length, Black Cascade, sees the light of day, but Southern Lord Records is releasing a limited edition EP in the meantime by the reigning kind sof American Black Metal. Malevolent Grain features the band’s most recent edition, guitarist Will Linsday, and the return of Jamie Meyers’ (Hammers of Misfortune) haunting vocals on ‘A Looming Resonance.’ This drops on 180-gram vinyl exclusively, with a tour-only CD version.
