Player of the Week: Chaisson Allen

On Saturday the men’s basketball team was on national television to participate in the ESPN Bracket Busters.
Going in, the Huskies were on a three-game losing streak; they hadn’t lost four in a row all season.’ ‘ In need of a good performance, guard Chaisson Allen stepped up and delivered. He scored 20 points along with three rebounds, and he was clutch from behind the arc as well, shooting 75 percent.’ He also and ten points and five rebounds in last nights 47-46 win at Drexel.
This performance earned Allen Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
‘ ‘I had two pretty strong games,’ Allen said. ‘Coach talked to me before the game, he told me to step up’ and be more of a leader and I challenged myself to take on that role.’
‘ The sophomore is a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Because of that, Allen has had to make a transition to living north. A large part of the reason he came here and is adapting so well, he said, is of head coach Bill Coen.
‘The reason I really chose Northeastern was because coach Coen had a big impact on my decision,’ Allen said. ‘He’s a great guy, and a great coach and he helped me make the transition from coming from down south to being up north. It’s been easy with the friends and the coaches, we’re just a big family.’ The things that everybody goes through when they miss home, miss their family, but that’s when your team steps it up and is there for you.’
This year the team has traveled a lot including a preseason swing in Canada. As a result many players have had to make up a lot of schoolwork. Allen is no different, and is doing well despite the hardships.
‘School has been fine,’ Allen said. ‘It’s been tougher traveling on the road this semester, but the teachers are working well with us and everything, making it easier for us.’
Allen said he has hopes to continue his basketball career after Northeastern. His goal is to play in the NBA.
With a two game winning streak, the Huskies hope to gain momentum going into the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)’ tournament and hopefully the NCAA tournament. The Huskies have one more conference game before the start of the CAA tournament in Richmond, Va.
‘[Our] goals are just to finish out the season strong, get some big wins, and hopefully win the conference tournament,’ Allen said.
