Letter to the Editor: Candidate focuses on solutions to campus issues

Campaigns don’t happen overnight. During the past few months, I have talked to students about issues they face here. Through my positions within the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Alternative Spring Break program, as a Resident Assistant and student who has participated in co-op, I have many views of the university. It was through the conversations and my personal experiences that I put together my vision for next year. It does not address specific symptoms, but rather addresses the underlying root causes for these issues.
The five points of focus for this vision are accessibility, sustainability, connection, accountability and student organizations. Although these are broad and overarching issues, I have identified specific solutions that can help us tackle the large concerns that face our campus. By addressing these five points, SGA can help ‘giveNUaVoice.’
Through my work during the past three years, including my current position as SGA vice president for student services, I have developed the experience and respect for the administration that will allow me to address the issues. In order to enhance the experience of each student and continue moving forward as a university, we need to address the accessibility of advising and SGA; environmental and financial sustainability of the campus; students’ connection to campus life and Boston; accountability of professors and administrators; access to involvement and programming of organizations.
These are large issues, and my vision includes specific ways to address the problems facing the campus that I have formed through my own experience and by listening to other students. These solutions will not cure the problems, but they serve as a first step toward the end goal. To address the issue of connection to campus life, we will launch a weekly programming e-newsletter to inform students of events going on around campus. In addition, we will expand the plasma TV announcement network that is currently in the Curry Student Center to locations across campus. This way, we can more effectively market events on campus.
There are countless more students who I have not had the opportunity to speak with directly. Recognizing that the symptoms of these issues change daily, your help is needed to make the vision a success. I encourage you to visit the feedback section of my campaign website and finish this sentence:’ ‘I Love NU, but’hellip;,’ because there are always things that we can improve. It has been great to see the number of responses that have come in already and I hope you will let us know how we can make Northeastern better for you.
The vision I have set forth will change as new issues arise, but by tackling the underlying causes, we can make sure your voice is heard. For more information, visit www.FoxForNU.com.
