Letter to the Editor: Springfest concert saves the (Jimmy Eat) World

The vernal equinox may have occurred last weekend, but spring’s official grand entrance is happening Sunday at Northeastern with the commencement of Springfest. The Council for University Programs (CUP) is presenting its week-long event series with mental and physical challenges and tournaments, as well as performances by Jimmy Eat World, Guster, Super Cr3w and a lecture by New England Patriots’ linebacker Tedy Bruschi.
Springfest kicks off with the ‘Springfest Returns’ obstacle course Sunday. Eight teams will compete in a three-round-elimination test of endurance, knowledge and strength. That night, students will compete in a Rock Band tournament where there will be one grand-prize winner from 16 teams. The competition will be in afterHOURS at 7 p.m. It is first come, first serve registration, so come by with a team of four people and prove that you will be the next superheroes of rock ‘n’ roll. The final competition event will be Tuesday night. This will be a scavenger hunt where teams of three to five people will work to rescue the damsel in distress. After an evil agency kidnaps the president’s daughter, the superhero teams will solve clues around campus that will eventually lead them to the endangered damsel.
Monday will feature one of the most exciting events of the week:’ Bruschi will speak in Blackman Auditorium at 8 p.m. Bruschi will speak not only about his career in the NFL, but also about the stroke he suffered and his inspiring recovery. Bruschi’s lecture is part of our ‘Be a Hero’ community service campaign. We will set up tables outside Blackman before the event to raise awareness for one of Bruschi’s charities and to raise money for an individual who will run the Boston Marathon for Tedy’s Team. Tickets for the event are on sale now for $5 at the Blackman box office.
The fun continues Wednesday with a barbecue during activities period from 11:45 a.m. until 1:25 p.m. in Centennial Quad. The barbecue will feature music from WRBB and a booth for Colleges Against Cancer (CAC), which will be raising awareness for the Relay for Life event and promoting a competition to raise money in hopes of having cancer survivor and Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester speak at Northeastern. CAC will be on the Centennial Quad Thursday for activities period as well, as part of the Springfest carnival from 2:50 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. You will be entertained by inflatable challenges and superhero themed-booths provided by Kappa Sigma, as well as more music spun by DJ Deathstar from WRBB. These events will also feature free giveaways and Springfest shirts.
That night we will have a dance show in Blackman featuring winners of MTV’s ‘Randy Jackson Presents:’ America’s Best Dance Crew Season 2,’ Super Cr3w. The boys from Las Vegas will headline a show featuring Northeastern dance groups like Kinematix, Ladi Missfitz, Bhrangra and Kaliente, and professional Boston groups like Static Noyze and Wrush. The event is free and tickets are available now at the Blackman box office.
Saturday will feature the annual Springfest concert, featuring Jimmy Eat World, Guster and DJ Diplo at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. Immediately following the concert at 11 p.m., come to afterHOURS and sing your heart out at karaoke.
Sunday will be the conclusion of Springfest week. The final event will be a trash pick-up, presented by CUP and the Huskey Energy Action Team. We encourage student organizations and individuals to help clean the campus’ surrounding areas like the Fens and Ruggles. The event is the highlight of our ‘Be a Hero’ campaign, encouraging Northeastern students to contribute to our campus and community.
