Player of the Week: Kendra Walton

With the women’s basketball team down one point with 54 seconds remaining in their last game of the season against Hofstra, the ball ended up in the hands of junior forward Kendra Walton.
Walton proceeded to drain a three point shot to give the Huskies the lead for good. She ended with 10 points and eight rebounds in the Huskies 55-51 win over Hofstra last Wednesday, a win that clinched the sixth seed in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament for the Huskies. This clutch performance has earned her the Huntington News Player of the Week honor.
‘ Walton is a co-captain for the Huskies, something she said she is very proud of.
‘I think I lead by example,’ said Walton. ‘I make sure everything our coach wants our team to be [happens.]’
‘ Schools like Providence and Wake Forrest’ recruited Walton, but she ultimately decided to come to Northeastern.
Several factors influenced her decision to come to Huntington Ave.
‘ One reason is the quality of the criminal justice program, in which she is studying, she said. She also liked the idea of the co-op program.
However, the biggest factor was the proximity to her home in New Haven, Conn., she said.
‘ Walton is not like most other college athletes. Along with the normal pressures of classes and basketball, she has a three-year-old son, Amare.
Amare stays with Walton’s mother in New Haven, but comes up for all of Walton’s games. Walton had Amare before her freshman year of college and was forced to redshirt that year.
‘He’s home with my mom, so it’s a lot easier than having him here,’ she said. ‘But it’s hard not seeing him a lot. When he comes to the games it was hard at first, him leaving after, but he is getting used to it now. I just can’t wait to get home this summer.’
But before that, Walton and the Huskies have some business to take care of. They open the CAA tournament tonight at 7:30 when they face eleventh seeded Georgia State.
