Employee Remembered

By Rob Tokanel, News Staff

Joseph C. Scurio Jr., a family man and longtime member of the Northeastern community, died Thursday, Aug. 6 after a heart attack in his Somerville home. He was 57.
A Somerville native, Mr. Scurio worked at Northeastern for more than 26 years. He most recently served as warehouse coordinator in the university’s Jamaica Plain warehouse where he oversaw the organization of incoming shipments to the school.
Director of Physical Plant Services in the Facilities Department Jack Malone worked closely with Mr. Scurio and said he was a good employee who was well-liked by his peers.
‘He was a friendly person, and people just generally liked him here,’ he said.
Mr. Scurio’s real passions, his family and his music, existed outside the Northeastern world in which he spent so much time professionally, Malone said.
‘He loved playing in his band,’ he said. ‘They used to play in a local spot in Somerville. He loved all kinds of music and played a lot of the old tunes.’
According to an announcement on the George L. Doherty Funeral Service, Inc. website, Mr. Scurio is survived by his wife, Kathryn; his three children, Jessica, Jacob and Rachel; and four grandchildren, Kayla, Jordan, Gabriel and Jasmine.
The funeral procession will depart today from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home at 855 Broadway St. in Somerville, at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church in Somerville at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited.
The News could not reach Mr. Scurio’s family.
