Many great women’s hockey players that have won the Beanpot, Olympic gold medals and World Championship gold medals have skated on the ice at historic Matthews Arena.
The men’s hockey team ended 2011 on a high note, winning the Mariucci Classic Tournament with a 3-2 New Year’s Eve victory over host school and No. 2 University of Minnesota before a crowd of 8,765.

When No. 18 University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks strolled into Matthews Arena Saturday night, they were sitting just as pretty as the Huskies. Neither team had seen a loss in five consecutive contests. My introduction to the Northeastern men’s hockey team came on Friday, Oct. 19, 2007. In the first game of the 2007-2008 season, Providence came to Matthews Arena and the two teams produced a thrilling game. Ryan Ginand instantly became my favorite Husky after scoring two goals, including one with about five minutes to go. Chris Donovan drove to the net and scored the game winner 44 seconds into overtime. The Huskies were 1-0 and I was hooked.
The men’s hockey team earned its third consecutive win at the University of Michigan on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., with a 4-1 non-conference victory.
With three losses behind them, the No. 10 Northeastern Huskies were looking to reverse a losing streak against No. 7 Boston University Terriers yesterday night at Matthews Arena. That’s just what they got when they blanked the team from Commonwealth Avenue 2-0. The 32-save effort from senior goalie Florence Schelling earned her a nation leading fifth shut out of the season.
