2014 commencement speaker: Janet Napolitano

The 112th commencement address in TD Garden will be delivered by Janet Napolitano, president of the University of California (UC) system and previous Secretary of Homeland Security in President Barack Obama’s administration, according to Northeastern’s website.

The New York native, who was ranked the eighth most powerful woman in the world by Forbes, will be presented as an honorary doctorate during the ceremony in front of 20,000 graduating students and Northeastern community members, according to the university’s website.

A former governor of Arizona, Napolitano was the first female Secretary of Homeland Security. She has led many federal and local organizations that support children and school teachers, etc. Now, as the 20th president of the UC colleges, Napolitano oversees 10 campuses and more than 234,000 students, according to the UC Office of the President’s website.

“[Napolitano’s] commitment to making an impact on society through public service is exemplary of the accomplished, fulfilled life we aspire for all Northeastern graduates to achieve,” Aoun said on the university’s website.

This will not be Napolitano’s first time on Northeastern’s campus. In November 2012, she visited Northeastern’s Neal F. Finnegan Plaza to honor Veterans Day with Aoun and gave a keynote address at the Veteran’s Day Ceremony.

More honorary doctorate recipients will be announced on the university’s website soon.
